Shimeji Browser Extension is a free browser extension that allows you to play with lively little characters roaming around on your browser screen. Developed by Jarno Le Conté and shimejis.xyz, this cool little browser add-on lets you install and run “shimejis” or animated characters that can run around on your computer screen.
Similar to Shimeji-ee, Shimeji Browser Extension is mainly an installer and doesn’t offer a quick redirection to wherever you can get more shimejis to add to your collection. Thus, you’ll have to read up on just how to enable them on your screen—although the process is usually easy.
How do I download Shimeji Browser Extension?
As a software file, shimejis are little characters—also called “desktop buddies”—that roam around on your screen. If programmed with various actions, they can interact with whatever elements are currently present on your desktop, such as climbing open windowed programs and sitting on top of them. They’re fairly autonomous so you can just leave them to loiter on their own and observe their antics. You can also drag and poke them.
Popular shimejis are often modeled after famous fictional characters and tend to display their distinct personalities, too. Desktop Goose, for instance, is just as wily as its original counterpart from Untitled Goose Game. However, shimeji installers like Shimeji Browser Extension usually have only one default shimeji available and will prompt you to download more on your own. Fortunately, they’ll usually provide a general link you can go to.
After installing this extension from your online store, you’ll both be redirected to its official website and be given one default shimeji named “Blank Guy.” To get other characters, simply click on any of the character packs on the website’s directory. Take note that this website doesn’t have an exhaustive list, though, so you’ll have to search online for other packs. Additionally, the shimejis are limited to the browser window.

All in all, Shimeji Browser Extension is a great choice if you’re interested in trying out shimejis for the first time. Not only is it easy to install and use, but it also offers some other characters you may be familiar with. However, just like other similar programs, it simply lets these animated characters run on your screen and doesn’t provide you with a huge selection of them.
